Coffee Review – Stumptown’s Hair Bender
In honor of National Coffee day, we’re releasing a review of a classic, crowd favorite – the Hair Bender roast from Portland-based Stumptown Coffee. Slated as a Stumptown staple and their neighborhood ‘welcome wagon’ coffee when they were just settling in to their first shop, this coffee has a history and swagger. The Stumptown Hair Bender used to be in their own words, “our parting gift to anyone who stepped in our doors and asked, “What the sweet hell is happening in here?” Of course, we realized we had to give this coffee a go.

This coffee is amazing and every bit as ‘hair bending’ as the name insinuates. It’s light with a smooth hint of chocolate, but don’t let it fool you because it holds true to its name! What a buzz from my pour over on a Tuesday morning. I was feeling a bit ‘meh’ about it almost being hump day, and then I had 2 cups of this baby and was buzzing around the house getting my day started. I’ll be sure and set this one aside for when I truly want to crush a big project, or laundry, or both.

The instant chocolaty and subtle aroma of Stumptown’s Hair Bender blend filled my kitchen as I ground the beans to the perfect coarseness. I scooped about a tablespoon of medium coarse coffee per cup of water into my [new!] french press and let it steep for 3 – 6 minutes. After, I poured my coffee into a mug and added a splash of almond milk for personal preference. Wow – I was pleasantly surprised by the bright and sweet notes I tasted. I’ve had a cup (or a couple) every morning since I’ve tried Hair Bender and would highly recommend it! It was the perfect amount of post-consumption coffee buzz I could have asked for on a Wednesday morning before heading to my marketing class at the HAAS school of business.
